What SEO Actually Is
SEO, or search engine optimization, is the work of making your website easier for search engines to understand and more worth ranking. It covers three areas: the technical condition of the site, the content on it, and the reputation the rest of the web gives it.
It is not a switch, a submission, or a package of keywords. It is maintenance on an asset you already own, and like any maintenance it shows its value over months rather than days.
If you are here mainly to find out what it costs, the short answer is that most local SEO retainers run $500 to $3,000 a month depending on the site and the market.
Our SEO pricing page gives the industry benchmarks and ours.
Why Most SEO Promises Fail
You have probably received the emails. Top of Google, guaranteed, this week. The vast majority of those operators cannot deliver, and the reason is worth understanding before you hire anyone.
Ranking quickly means manipulating the result rather than earning it: bought links, hidden text, spun content, pages written for a crawler instead of a customer. All of it breaks
Google Search Essentials, the rules Google publishes for exactly this purpose.
These tactics do sometimes work, briefly. Then Google's next update catches them and the site loses rankings or disappears from results altogether. The damage outlasts the gain by a wide margin, and the agency that caused it is rarely around to fix it.
That is the calculation behind the eGumball promise: everything we do stays inside Google's guidelines. It is slower. It also does not evaporate.
What eGumball Does
1.
Technical audit. We review the site for the faults that stop search engines reading it properly: crawl and indexing problems, broken links and redirect chains, duplicate or missing titles and descriptions, missing headings, page speed, and mobile rendering.
2.
Keyword and market research. What your customers actually type, what your competitors already rank for, and where the realistic openings are. Wanting to rank for a term is not the same as being able to.
3.
On-page optimization. Titles, descriptions, heading structure, internal linking, and content depth, so each page has a clear subject and says enough about it to deserve the position.
4.
Structured data. Machine-readable markup that tells search engines and AI answer engines what your business is, what it offers, and where it operates.
5.
Off-site authority. Consistent business information across the web and legitimate citations, built rather than bought.
6.
Monthly reporting. What moved, what did not, and what we are doing next.
Where AI Search Fits
A growing share of searches never reach a list of links. Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity answer the question directly and cite a handful of sources. Being one of those sources is now part of the job.
The industry has given it two names,
GEO (generative engine optimization) and
AEO (answer engine optimization), and has started billing for it as a separate service at $1,000 to $5,000 a month on top of SEO.
We include it, because it is the same work. A page an answer engine can cite is a page with clean structured data, headings phrased as real questions, the answer in the first sentence, and business facts that agree with each other everywhere they appear. Every one of those also helps Google rank the page. There is no second piece of work to bill for. See
SEO pricing for how that changes what you pay compared with agencies that split it out.
SEO or Google Maps Marketing - Which Do You Need?
They are different systems and they are often confused.
SEO works on your website and its position in the ordinary web results, the blue links.
Google Maps marketing works on your
Google Business Profile and its position in the map results that sit above them.
A business can rank well in one and be invisible in the other. Most local businesses need both: the map catches people ready to call now, the website catches people still comparing. They also reinforce each other, because Google reads your website when it judges how legitimate your profile is.
How Long Does SEO Take?
Technical fixes can show up within weeks. Content and authority work usually takes three to six months to move rankings meaningfully, and longer in competitive categories.
Google states plainly that no one can guarantee a number one ranking. We will not, and you should treat anyone who does as telling you something useful about themselves.
What Does SEO Cost?
Published 2026 benchmarks put most local SEO retainers between
$500 and $3,000 per month, with the average around
$1,557. Full-service work for a US small business typically runs $1,500 to $3,200.
Where you land inside that depends on three things: the condition of your site, how competitive your market is, and how much of the work you want us to carry out rather than advise on. That is why we audit before quoting instead of naming a figure over the phone.
See SEO pricing for the full breakdown, what each level includes, and how we compare with the market. Or call 1-800-890-8940 and we will tell you what we would do and what it would cost.
Why eGumball
We have done this work since September 2007, through every Google update and three renames of the local product. Same company, same approach.
We employ specialists across SEO,
Google Business Profile optimization and
Google Ads rather than asking one person to cover all three. We have served more than 61,000 businesses and verified business data for 2.1 million, from Irvine, California.
And we will tell you when SEO is not the right spend. If your customers find you through the map rather than a search for information, we will say so.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between SEO and Google Maps marketing?
SEO is your website in the web results. Maps marketing is your profile in the map results. Separate systems, separate ranking factors.
What is black hat SEO?
Tactics used purely to manipulate rankings rather than improve the site. They break Google's rules, and when caught the site can lose rankings or be removed from results entirely.
How long before SEO works?
Technical fixes in weeks. Content and authority in three to six months, longer in competitive markets.
How much does SEO cost?
Most local retainers run $500 to $3,000 a month, averaging around $1,557. See
SEO pricing for ours and how we compare.
Do you charge extra for AI search optimization?
No. Most agencies add $1,000 to $5,000 a month for GEO or AEO. It is the same work as SEO done properly, so we include it.
Can you guarantee a number one ranking?
No, and neither can anyone else. Google says so itself.
Do I need SEO if I have a Google Business Profile?
Usually both. The profile catches people ready to act; the website catches people still deciding.
